Thirty-seven hardy nordic skiers participated in the Annual Kachemak Marathon free-style ski race held this Sunday, March 14th, 2004 at the Baycrest Trail system above Homer. A challenging and hilly course varying from 750’to 1250’ in elevation that started and finished near the Demonstration Forest/ Homestead Trailhead wound up, down and around for a 21 kilometer loop and continued around again for 43 kilometers under overcast skies and air temperatures near 0C (32F).
One of the traditions of the Kachemak Nordic Ski Club’s annual Kachemak Bay Marathon Ski is to recognize a pioneer of skiing on the Kenai Peninsula. Bib #1 was reserved this year for Edward Jackinsky 1914-2003 of Ninilchik and the bib was worn by his grandson, Morgan Jones of Homer. Edward learned to ski on barrel staves then on homemade birch skis and continued to ski while in the Army. He earned the Award of Soldier's Medal for a heroic rescue attempt on skis of two companions buried by a snowslide. His love of skiing has been passed on to his children and grandchildren.
